Learning to know the group of SUSI Educators

Amherst 17.-18. 6.2018

Getting to know each other and the city of Amherst.

City tour in Amherst with Alejandro Navarro.

Typical house in Amherst. Aloittavia yrityksiä tukeva ja rahoittava organisaatio.
Amherst is a wealthy city. Amherst on tyypillinen Uuden Englannin vauras pikkukaupunki. Kaupungissa on erittäin turvallista, puhdasta ja siistiä.
Alejandro Navarro from ITD (Institute of Training and Development)

I was worried about food beforehand. I had in my mind visions of big Hamburgers with crisps. Valentine Hall where we mostly eat has a great selection of fruits, vegetables and salads. I really enjoyed my meals.

Täältä haetaan ruoka Valentinen kahvilassa. You pick up your food here.

Valentine Hall - our dining place.

House of other participants nearby. Tyypillinen Amherstin talo. Monet rakennuksista on rakennettu yli 100-vuotta sitten ja ne edustavat siirtokuntarakentamista vauraimmillaan.

Sunset Avenue - kotikatu.

Sunset Avenue and ITD-House.

ITD-House - here I live. Mielettömän ihana ITD-talo, jossa majoitumme 10 osallistujan kanssa. Talo on rakennettu 1800-luvun lopussa.

Ensimmäisen maailmansodan veteraanin muistomerkki vanhalla hautausmaalla. Näitä lippuja oli alueella useita.

UNIMASS on yksi maailman arvostetuimmista yliopistoista. Tässä yksi rakennuksista. Alue on valtava, opiskelijoita 35 000.

Amherst College area.

In Finland you hardly see any cables in the air anymore. Sähkötolppia ei Suomessa juurikaan enää näe.

Rain after the tornado warning was over and we were allowed to go out. Alueella tuli tornado varoitus. Varoitus tuli käyttömme annettuihin kännyköihin sekä kaiuttimista kadulla. Varoitusaika kesti noin 1,5 tuntia. Tämä ei ole alueella tyypillistä.

Yoga session in the evening was lovely.
Khai Singaporesta ohjasi meille joogaa. Tätä aiomme jatkaa!

Food and sleep are the most important things to your health. Without decent sleep you get a headache. First day I was suffering from continuous headache. It just kept coming. I really felt in my head the night with only some hours of sleep in the flights and spending the best sleeping ours in the Chicago airport. I was drinking water the whole day.

First afternoon we went to a big supermarket for grocery shopping. It was like Tokmanni in Finland. You have lots of everything and some selection of food. The selection for vegetables and fruits was a tiny spot in the corner. At first I thought of buying apples. One apple costed 1,79 dollars! I could not believe it. In this supermarket vegetables were very expensive. Another difference was the plastic bags. As a Finn I had my own shopping bag with me. Still I ended up getting the groceries in three different plastic bags. Sales assistant at the desk was quick to pack everything for me. In the other hand recycling in our house works reasonably well.

During the first two days we have learned to know each other and our program. We will be working very hard every day. It is a unique possibility in our lives. Expectations are high. We are really appreciated and treated a special way. It is a great honor to be here with other globally selected professionals of education. U.S. Department of States invests a huge amount of money for this program. Institute of Training and Development has invested a huge amount of effort and time to prepare and accomplish the best for our group. I am very thankful of getting this opportunity.
