ITD – Reviewing the week, excited about beginning of the homestay weekend.

Friday! It has been an exciting week with with new friends. I feel exchausted and at the same time I am living the best time of my life. I don’t want to miss a minute. Today we reviewed and analyzed the speeches of this week with Bruce Laurie and Katie Lazdowski. It was good to stop at this point to discuss everything.

In the second session of the day Katie introduced us to Critical Pedagogy: case studies, methodologies and discussions. I enjoyed the session with a lot of interactive content. After lunch we presented our project ideas to Bruce or Katie. I decided to present my idea to Bruce to get support focusing the project thema. I will be working with immigration of Europeans to the U.S in the late 19th and early 20th century. It will be interesting to hear the project ideas of the others.

At ITD-house this was the cleaning day. Sheets and towels needed to be changed. Many of us have been doing laundry before homestay weekend. We have prepared food together in the evenings or went out to eat something together. Life starts to settle down.

At 5pm we were picked up to homestays. We will live with an American family this weekend. I am living with my hostmother Lori, her two daughters Sarah and Libby, one dog and a cat in a house surrounded by a beautiful garden with a pool and two cars on the driveway. I must have the most typical american family of all. We will have ”girls” weekend together while hostfather Eric is staying in Florida. At this home I am surrounded by Marimekko curtains, Alvar Aalto furniture and Muumi figures from Finland. The mother of the hostfather Eric is a Finn. I feel very welcome.         

Perjantaina oli aika vähän käydä läpi mitä olimme viikon aikana kokeneet. Palautekeskustelu oli hyvä. Kävimme kaikki luennot keskustellen läpi Bruce Laurien ja Katie Lazdowskin kanssa.

Katie kertoi meille tämän jälkeen kriittisesta pedagogiikasta, teimme toiminnallisia harjoituksia ryhmän kanssa. Osalle nämä olivat varmasti todella uusia. Katie pisti meidät kolmeen ryhmään, istuimme lattialla lukemassa kolmea versiota Punahilkasta. Sen jälkeen ryhmät hajotettiin ja kerroimme lukemamme tarinat vuorotellen uudessa ryhmässä. Olipa jännä. Vanha tarina punahilkasta, joka tarvitsee metsästäjän apua selvitäkseen olikin muuttunut. Meidän lukemassamme vaihtoehtoisessa tarinassa Punahilkka keräsi itse apuvälineet (tammenterhoja, hunajaa ja kukkia eli oli neuvokas), hän auttoi matkalla karhua (avulias). Susi kaatui koska aivasti hengitettyään siitepölyä ja liukastuttuaan tammenterhoihin. Suden turkkiin tarttui hunajaa ja mehiläiset ajoivat suden pois. Punahilkka oli siis rohkea, toimelias ja akiitivinen. Kolmannessa tarinassa susi olikin kiltti! Näissä tarinoissa tavoitteemme oli löytää yksipuolisen tarinan ongelmat. Kyllä löytyi!

Oli tosi jännää läheä isäntäperhevierailulle. Minä pääsin Knappin perheeseen. Lori äidin ja tyttärien Sarah (valmistui juuri collegesta) sekä Libbyn (viimeinen vuosi high schoolia edessä) perheeseen. Isä Eric oli työmatkalla Floridassa, häntä en valitettavasti tavannut. Isä Ericin äiti Riitta on suomalainen, joten perheellä oli kiinteät siteet suomeen. Keskustelimme valtavasti viikonlopun aikana. Nautin todella. Teimme kaikkea normaalia perheen puuhastelua: ostoksia, kävelyä koiran kanssa, ajelua autolla, elokuvissa katsoimme Ocean's 8 leffan - oli hienoa päästä Yhdysvalloissa elokuvateatteriin. Tosi kiva viikonloppu.

Libbyn valintaoppaat collegea varten vasemmalla. Kummassakin oli noin 800 sivua Libby on sinisellä merkinnyt mahdollisia opiskelupaikkoja. Oikealla 1000 sivuinen kirja SAT testiä varten, jota Libby opiskelee ensi talven.
